How to get a raise?

Have you gained substantial job experience in the US and looking for a raise? Then some of the following tips should help you in negotiating for a raise.

Performance at work

In most US organizations raises are directly proportional to the job performance i.e. they are based on the individual goal achievement, group achievements and the overall company performance. Most companies perform regular performance evaluation of employees known as performance appraisals. One could make use of them to demonstrate the individual skills and accomplishments that could eventually help in getting a raise.

Performance review

If performance based review is not automatically given in the place you work, you could politely talk to your immediate supervisor and schedule a meeting for performance review and asking a raise. Take utmost care in setting up the meeting with a gap of one week so that your superior has enough time to collect the details of your performance. Similarly if the superior calls for a performance review ask for a period of two to three days so that you could prepare your work description.

Work description

A typical work description consist of

1. A brief summary of the job role
2. Job responsibilities
3. Organizational chart describing where the job exactly falls.
4. Experience and educational qualifications required for the job.

A work description helps in performance appraisal and goal setting. Usually the HR department prepares work description you could also prepare one by yourself. The work description should have the date of preparation or revision.

Work accomplishments

List all your accomplishments at work since your last performance appraisal. This is the time for you to blow your own horn. Describe your achievements with a positive attitude. Describe about every detail of your tasks, as the superior may not be aware of all the tasks performed by you.

If the supervisor, points out to the areas where you need to improve, listen without any prejudice. This would be helpful for you to improve your work for the next performance appraisal.

Finally after discussing your accomplishments and improvements, its time to ask for a raise. Instead of asking for a particular amount you should be willing to accept anything in a certain range. Be practical and realistic in deciding the amount for your raise.

Know Your worth

If you are not sure of what you are worth, ask people in similar jobs what their pay is. You could also check the web for the salary information.
While negotiating for a raise be cool and don't demand or threaten to quit.
If you receive a very little raise or nothing at all analyze the reasoning given for this. Think from your superior's point of view. If you find the reasoning to be genuine you should try to act upon it to improve your performance. On the other hand if you feel that the appraisal has been unfair schedule for another meeting.

Your next meeting

In your next meeting take utmost care to bring all the necessary documentation to support your point. Acknowledge all the points specified by your superior in the first interview and create a strategy for improvement.

Some companies may not give raise due to tight budgets. In such cases you could try to negotiate for a raise in alternate ways like additional stock options, additional vacation or any other benefits.

Following these steps will definitely assist you in getting a raise.
