My night in the emergency room
By Wayne Ferreira

That was my first visit to an " emergency room" with a life threatening obstruction of the gut. That was a Monday evening when I started feeling a pain similar to the one I experienced at the time of my child delivery. My husband called up gastroenterologist and was adviced to take me to the hospital immediately.

My doctors warned that the obstruction could lead to an intestinal perforation and cause complications or even death could occur. In such condition my husband took me to the emergency room. By the time we arrived to the emergency room it was swarming with patients. The emergency room was filled with the screams of pain, people bleeding from their wounds and children crying. The emergency room is the one place that's busy at any time as there are always people committing stupid attempts, there is a child who swallows a dollar and another one with a crayon in the nose.

Knowing my serious condition my doctor had already called the emergency room to alert them of my case. In spite of my doctor's instructions and my terrible screams I was given a one-hour wait period had to be spent in the waiting room.

My husband not able to bear my screams of pain literally carried me to the front desk and almost begged the attendant to reconsider my case. Silently she asked me for my insurance card. I started searching for my insurance, which made me bend over that, increased my pain And so were my screams. My husband reached for my purse to find my insurance simultaneously asking the attendant to call a doctor. By this time my pain kicked and I was literally yelling with it.

Added to the terrible pain came the strange feeling in my gut .i could sense that something was going to blow out of my body. I was still attempting to maintain my composure and bear the pain, when the attendant started asking some mundane questions about my medical history. Much to her sorrow something happened that I was expecting. I vomited all over her desk and I think some splashed on her blouse. Then I fainted. When I woke up after several hours I found myself in the bed, admitted to the medical floor. Till today I am not sure wether my screaming, vomiting or fainting have got me into the room.

Although the emergency room personnel are certainly capable of solving problems often they cant because of too many patients and too little time. You are the person that needs to be persistent in your attempt of resolving a problem.

The emergency room is the no nonsense department of the hospital. Its that part of the hospital that brings the best and the worst of medical care.
