There
are basically two types of US visas
Immigrant visas
for those intending to reside permanently in the United
States (whether or not they intend to work)
Nonimmigrant visas
Indian citizens who wish to visit the United States
temporarily must first obtain a visa. Those coming to the
US as tourists, to visit friends or relatives, for medical
treatment or to conduct business, must obtain a visitor's
visa (B-1 for business or B-2 for pleasure/medical treatment).
Students must obtain a foreign student visa (F for academic
studies, or M for nonacademic or vocational studies), and
exchange program participants either a J visa (for programs
designated by the United States Information Agency) or a
Q visa (for programs designated by the Immigration and Naturalization
Service).
Visa services are available at the US Embassy in New Delhi
as well as at the three Consulates General at Mumbai, Calcutta
and Chennai. Each office is responsible for, or consular
jurisdiction over, a particular geographic area in India.
