Documents you will have to carry to the consulate:

Your Passport

The passport has to be valid for at least six months from the day you appear for the consulate interview.

Essential Documents
Passport and Visa

Application Fee

An NIV application fee of US$ 45.00 in favor of "American Consulate General."

Original Copies of the Following Certificates

  • The I-20 form, Admission letter and correspondences with the university, which you feel is important.
  • Copies of TOEFL and GRE.
  • Financial Documentation - bank statements, property documents, tax returns of your parents, share certificates, affidavits from sponsor.
  • All education certificates.

The Interview

You will be given an application form OF-156 form, which must be filled and given to the clerk.

You will have to give your passport at the counter. The clerk at the counter staples your passport with a token and gives a token to you. Then pay the application fee at the counter. You may then sit in the waiting room and wait for your turn to be interviewed. Keep all documents handy and in sequence so that it is easy to provide during the interview. You will be called for the interview in due course of time. In the interview, answer all questions verbally and do not produce documents unless asked to do so. However, produce the right document when asked.

Once the interview is completed, the interviewer conveys you the result. If you were issued a visa, you will have to go to the cashier and pay the visa fees. You will also be asked to collect your passport with visa and I-20 later in the day.
If the visa is refused, the officer gives you the refusal letter and returns the passport immediately. You will be then allowed to reapply after three working days.

The key to a successful interview is preparation. You will have to be ready with all the necessary documents, and also convince the visa officer of your intent to return to your home country on completion of your course.
